JK Plumbing

24 Hour Plumber for Palo Alto and Menlo Park

JK Plumbing answers emergency calls around the clock, seven days a week, and typically reaches Palo Alto and Menlo Park within the hour. A licensed plumber picks up — not a call centre. If you have water coming in now, shut the main off first, then call (415) 359-4588.

What counts as a plumbing emergency?

Useful to sort these into three groups, because treating everything as urgent wastes money and treating nothing as urgent costs far more.

Call now, whatever the hour:

  • A burst or actively leaking supply pipe
  • Water coming through a ceiling or down a wall
  • Sewage backing up into the house
  • No water at all to the property
  • A water heater leaking from the tank body
  • Any smell of gas — though that’s a different call first, see below
  • A slab leak: unexplained warm patch on the floor, or running water audible with every fixture off

Call today, but it can wait for daylight:

  • A single blocked fixture when other drains still run
  • A dripping water heater relief valve
  • A running toilet or a leaking tap
  • Low pressure at one fixture

Book it in the week:

  • Slow drains with no backup
  • A fixture you want replaced
  • Routine jetting or a camera survey

Can a burst pipe wait until morning? No. A supply line under pressure moves a lot of water very quickly, and the cost difference between a plumber at 2am and the drying, flooring and drywall work after six hours of unchecked flow isn’t close. Shut the main and call.

What to shut off before we arrive

Four things, in order of how often they matter:

  1. The water main. Usually at the meter near the street, sometimes in a box at the property line. Turn clockwise until it stops. Find it now, while nothing is wrong — the worst time to learn where your shutoff is, is while standing in water. In older Palo Alto homes the valve itself is sometimes seized, which is worth discovering on a calm afternoon rather than during a burst.
  2. The fixture stop, if the leak is clearly at one fixture. Small oval or lever valve under a sink or behind a toilet. Isolating one fixture beats shutting the whole house.
  3. The water heater. If the leak is at the heater, close the cold inlet valve on top of the tank and turn the gas control to OFF or switch off the breaker. Don’t leave a leaking tank heating.
  4. Electricity near standing water. If water is reaching outlets, appliances or a panel, kill that circuit — or the main breaker if you can reach it safely and dryly. If you can’t reach it safely, stay out and tell us when you call.

Then take photos before cleanup starts. Insurers ask, and you’ll want them.

Gas is a different emergency — and the number depends on which city you’re in

This catches people out, and most emergency plumbing pages for this area give the wrong number for half their readers.

If you smell gas: leave the building first, then call from outside. Don’t switch anything on or off, don’t use the doorbell, and don’t go looking for the source.

In Palo Alto, you are not calling PG&E. Palo Alto runs its own gas system — it’s the only city in California that owns and operates its full utility suite — so gas, water and wastewater emergencies go to City of Palo Alto Utilities dispatch on (650) 329-2579.

In Menlo Park, it is PG&E, on 1-800-743-5000.

Either way, if there’s immediate danger, 911 comes first. Call us after the utility has made the situation safe — we handle the appliance and the pipework, they handle the supply.

Sewage backing up — is it your pipe or the city’s?

Worth knowing before you authorise anything, because the answer changes who pays.

In Palo Alto the city owns the sewer main in the street; the lateral running from your house to that main is yours. If the backup is in the main, the city responds and it isn’t your bill. If it’s in your lateral, it is.

The practical signal: when a backup affects several properties at once, or when it surfaces at a street cleanout rather than inside the house, call the city utility before paying a plumber. When it’s confined to your property, it’s a lateral problem. We can usually tell quickly on site, and we’d rather tell you to call the city than bill you for their pipe.

For what follows a confirmed lateral problem, sewer line services in Palo Alto covers diagnosis and repair, and who pays for sewer lateral replacement covers the responsibility question in more depth.

How fast can we reach Palo Alto and Menlo Park?

Typically under an hour. We dispatch from Burlingame, which is a straight run down the 101, and we carry the parts that cover most emergency work — shutoff valves, supply lines, wax rings, water heater parts, cabling and jetting equipment.

What we won’t do is quote you a guaranteed arrival time on a page. Traffic, weather and where the van already is all change it. What you get instead is a real ETA on the phone when you call, from someone who knows where the van actually is. If we can’t get to you quickly, we’ll say so rather than let you wait.

What emergency plumbing costs

There is an after-hours premium. Nights, weekends and holidays cost more than a scheduled weekday visit, which is true of every plumber in this market and anyone claiming otherwise is recovering it somewhere else.

What we won’t do is quote a repair over the phone sight unseen. You get a price in writing before work starts, including the call-out, and if we open something up and conditions change we stop and explain before continuing.

One honest piece of advice: if the situation is genuinely contained — you’ve isolated a single fixture, nothing is actively flooding — waiting until morning is usually the cheaper call, and we’ll tell you that on the phone rather than dispatching a van you don’t need.

Where we cover

Palo Alto and Menlo Park, plus Atherton, East Palo Alto, Los Altos, Mountain View and Redwood City, and north through the Peninsula to Burlingame, San Mateo and San Francisco.

Emergency coverage is around the clock, every day. For non-urgent work, water heater repair and our other service pages cover the scheduled side.

Frequently asked questions

What actually counts as a plumbing emergency?
Anything actively releasing water or sewage, or cutting off water entirely: a burst supply pipe, water through a ceiling, sewage backing up indoors, no water to the property, a water heater leaking from the tank body, or a suspected slab leak. A single blocked fixture, a dripping tap or a running toilet can wait for daylight. Any gas smell is an emergency, but the first call is to your gas utility, not a plumber.

How fast can a 24 hour plumber reach Palo Alto?
Typically under an hour from our Burlingame base, down the 101. We don’t guarantee an arrival time in writing because traffic and current job location change it — you get a real ETA on the phone from someone who knows where the van is.

What should you shut off before the plumber arrives?
The water main at the meter if water is flowing freely, or the individual fixture stop if the leak is isolated to one fixture. If the water heater is the source, close its cold inlet valve and turn the gas control off or the breaker off. Kill power to any circuit where water is reaching outlets or appliances, if you can do so safely. Then photograph everything before cleanup.

Do emergency calls cost more at night and on weekends?
Yes — there’s an after-hours premium for nights, weekends and holidays, as there is with any plumber running a genuine 24-hour service. You get the price in writing before work begins, call-out included. If your situation is contained and can safely wait until morning, we’ll tell you so on the phone.

Can a burst pipe wait until morning?
No. A pressurised supply line releases a great deal of water quickly, and the damage from several hours of unchecked flow will cost far more than the after-hours call. Shut the main off and call immediately. If you can’t find or turn the main, that itself is a reason to call now.
